Abstract
Tomislav Lipic (1985-2022), PhD, was a research associate at the Laboratory for Machine Learning and Knowledge Representation, at the Rudjer Boskovic Institute (RBI). He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. During his PhD, he was a visiting research scholar at the Center for Polymer Studies, Boston University, USA. His main research interests included complex networks modeling and analysis, human-centric explainable AI based on interpretable machine and deep learning models, as well as other data science and big data methodologies and their applications in computational social sciences, neuroscience, biomedicine, medical imaging and social good in general. He published over 40 peer-reviewed original scientific papers in international journals and conference proceedings. In 2015, 2018, 2019 he received the RBI scientific excellence annual award for his research. He participated in more than a dozen different national, bilateral and EU (FP7, Horizon2020) industry and scientific projects and project initiatives in diverse topic areas focused around theory and application of data science. In addition, he was a lecturer and assistant at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Science, Department of Mathematics, where he taught courses "Artificial Intelligence" and "Machine Learning", a lecturer at the Algebra University College, and a professor at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management.
