Abstract
The importance of Open Access to scientific publications is described in different European Commission policies and recommendations, and provided important foundations for most of the EU countries who have adopted national Open Access policies. In addition to open access to publications, Open Science includes alternative ways of reporting on the results of scientific research that allow reuse, open research data, open code and open standards, with the goal of economic growth, innovation and society development. Open Science changes the way of conducting scientific research and accessing and using of research results, allowing new forms of scientific exchanges and co-operation to emerge. Open Science improves connections between different disciplines, enabling interdisciplinary research, which is necessary for faster development of science and solving social challenges. The plan of the leading European scientific research funders seeks to ensure open access to all publications from January 2020. It is currently in public debate, and the implementation process suggests changes that emerge from Open Access frameworks and include significant Open Science segments. cOAlition S main goal is: " By 2020 scientific publications that result from research funded by public grants provided by participating national and European research councils and funding bodies, must be published in compliant Open Access Journals or on compliant Open Access Platforms.". Achieving it is possible only by a broad range of activities for opening scientific research in all EU countries. The workshop will cover all segments of Open Science initiatives and plans within the EU: from open access to publications, through open research data and their role in the European Open Research Cloud, to open and alternative ways of research assessment. Through practical examples we will try to demonstrate the best implementation practices, as well as the role of the OpenAIRE consortium and the way it provides the necessary infrastructure and services for scientists, funders and research institutions. Open Science has tremendous potential for strengthening the competitiveness of the entire European scientific-research system. Still, the opening up of science also faces numerous challenges, such as legal restrictions, personal data protection issues, copyright and related rights and licensing, promotion and career advancement criteria, and ensuring the quality of non-traditional ways of scientific communication. In a joint discussion, we will try to answer your questions and consider the possibilities of applying these new initiatives in Croatia.
