Abstract
Digital repositories are a fundamental information infrastructure which enables open access (OA) to scientific information on the principle of so-called "green road". Success of digital repositories in providing OA to its content presumes cooperation of scientists/authors who are expected to self-archive a version of their work into digital repositories, as well as to ensure the retention of dissemination rights for their work. Although there are many benefits for the authors which self-archive their publications in OA, they often avoid it if it is not mandatory. Therefore, the existence of OA self-archiving mandates, but also the mechanisms for monitoring its implementation are crucial for the successful implementation of institutional and other digital repositories. This paper will present the current state regarding OA self-archiving mandates in the European Union, as well as in Croatia, with special emphasis on the first institutional OA self-archiving mandate at one Croatian scientific institution - the Ruđer Bošković Institute.
