Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the hole scavenger properties of ascorbic acid (AA) and its ability to prevent the photocorrosion of SnS2. For this purpose, the study of SnS2 photoelectrode was conducted in 0.1 M NaCl solution and in solutions with different concentrations of AA (1 mM, 10 mM and 100 mM). AA significantly increased the photocurrents and the amount of hydrogen produced; at 100 mM AA, the current increased 50-fold and 0.2 ml cm-2 h-1 of hydrogen was produced. The experiments were conducted at a low overpotential of 0.25 V vs. SCE, at which there is no contribution of electron tunneling through the Shottky barrier to the total currents. The current decrease during the photoelectrochemical process indicates degradation of the active material by photocorrosion. By using UV/Vis, XRD and XPS, it was found that the structure of the photocatalyst changed. The presence of AA reduced the rate of the photocorrosion process.
