Abstract
The electrodeposition method for (semi)quantitative alpha source preparation, using several electrolyte solution-cathode material combinations, was investigated and optimised. The investigated factors were focused on electrolyte composition and concentration, applied current, electrodeposition time, electrolyte volume and anode-cathode distance, along with the subsequent source heating conditions, for the conventional electrodeposition cell (with no external stirring or cooling system). The quality of the obtained sources was evaluated by alpha-particle spectrometry (spectral resolution) and autoradiography (source homogeneity). The conditions (temperature and the solution pH) during the electrodeposition process were also studied and discussed. The optimised parameters for each system were provided, and evaluated for usage in determination of actinides (uranium, plutonium, americium and curium isotopes) in various sample matrices.
