Research data are the basis of scholarly knowledge. They are being collected, observed or created for the purpose of analysis in order to produce new research results, new information and knowledge. They fully depend on the context and interpretation. Enabling open access (OA) to research data is one of the key elements of the open science initiative. Data management practices vary considerably across research disciplines regardless of the data type. In addition, practices and norms on data collecting, describing, archiving and disseminating can sometimes differ even within the same research discipline. Funding agencies have started to recognize the benefits of efficient data management. Accordingly, more and more funders require a Data Management Plan when submitting proposals. Besides these efforts, the infrastructure for technical and organizational support of data management, as another important precondition in achieving OA to research data, has also been developed. The paper presents the current state of the policies, infrastructures and standards for open research data.
