Abstract
Archiving of full-text documents in open access repositories (OAR) is one way of enabling open access to scientific information. Today almost every important scientific institution in the world has its own institutional repository that archives full text papers published by its employees. Although the number of OAR's and the amount of deposited content is increasing, OAR's do not fulfill their purpose if they don't join the global network of OAR's and devote enough attention to interoperability with other similar and related systems. Therefore, when establishing the OAR, one should think about metadata standards that will be used to describe stored records, quality control of input metadata, usage of controlled vocabularies, persistent identifiers, author identifiers, the implementation of various standards and protocols that will allow harvesting and/or the exchange of metadata between systems, etc. In this way repositories will be connected and this will provide greater visibility of their content and easier access to scientific literature. This paper provides an overview of the main areas and major initiatives related to interoperability issues that need special attention during the implementation of such an open access repository .
