Abstract
In this paper, the authors start from the conviction that the introduction of new techniques and methods of work in libraries and, in the information sector in general, make it necessary to expand the professional knowledge and skills of library personnel. The authors point to the slowly changing program of the formal education system and to the program of professional examinations for receiving a title in librarianship. In response, the authors advocate the quicker inclusion of new subject matter into teaching and into programs of continuing professional education. Furthermore, they compare the titles for various librarian and information science positions in the United States with the relatively poor range of professional job titles in Croatian librarianship, while placing emphasis on the advantages of differentiating library titles more precisely on the basis of the wide specter of knowledge and skills that contemporary library experts need.
