Abstract

For successful scholarly communication, we can highlight three activities that guarantee the validity of the results, namely the review process, reproducibility and usability of both published papers and research data. The commercialization of scholarly publishing, the crisis of the review process, the unavailability of published papers and research data, the research misconduct, the growing amount of publications, the paper-centric publications, etc., have brought scholarly communication into crisis. Open science offers opportunities to accelerate scientific progress and improve the impact of science for the benefit of society, but it can only be fully achieved by changing the system of evaluations and assessment of scientific research, which currently relies on the number of publications (and/or citations) and the prestige of journals/publishers . By valuing scientific quality rather than quantity, ensuring the reproducibility of research, creating FAIR research data, storing, sharing and reusing data, collaborating with all stakeholders in different disciplines and sectors, we can create a scientific environment that will greatly enhance society and the economy.
