Abstract

Web 2.0 has brought interactive interfaces which allow its users to contact with each other or to change website content, users are no longer passive viewers of offered information. One of such services is the social network Facebook. Emergence of new technologies and trends put in front of the librarians, after blog, the Facebook, and a question whether they should accept it and how they could apply it in their daily job. Opinions vary, but it is evident that there are more and more different types of libraries on Facebook. Considering this fact we were interested how may Croatian libraries has recognized and accepted Facebook and whether or not as well as how they use Facebook for the promotion of their services and collections, and approaching users. In order to determine the extent of presence of Croatian libraries on the Facebook, we have performed search of the groups, pages and people using the word library. The obtained results can be divided into two categories: the first category are groups/pages/persons who are established by the libraries (28 results), while the second are groups/pages/persons who are established by the users (9 results). The overall representation of Croatian libraries on Facebook shows that they are still at the beginning, especially when they are compared with other libraries in the world. Number of existing Croatian libraries on the Facebook is very small. They offer minimum information about themselves and their services. Mainly they have small number of registered members/fans, and the interaction with them on the Wall is poor. As the open remains the question about the attitude of librarians in Croatia about the need for library presence on Facebook.
