Abstract

Microalgae are being extensively studied for their potential use in the formulation of bioactive products. The green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (P. A. Dangeard) is one of the most commonly used model organisms in biotechnology, but its biological potential has not yet been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the biological potential of microalga C. reinhardtii cultivated under optimized laboratory conditions and investigate the influence of freeze-drying and drying of the microalgal biomass at different temperatures on the chemical properties and biological activity of C. reinhardtii extracts and fractions. The results demonstrated that the biological and chemical composition of C. reinhardtii, as well as its antioxidant, antidiabetic, antilipidemic, antimicrobial, and antitumor potential, are strongly influenced by cultivation conditions, particularly by the method and temperature of biomass drying. Low-temperature drying methods (< 50–60 °C) enabled the preservation of the highest amounts of bioactive compounds in C. reinhardtii extracts and fractions and led to the most pronounced biological effects. Overall, the obtained results confirm that C. reinhardtii is a valuable source of bioactive compounds with potential applications in the development of new pharmaceutical and food products.
