Abstract

The need for predictive models is increasing as we face changes that impact species and ecosystems at local, regional and global scales. Numerical modelling is a critical asset that scientists, policy makers, and societies use to anticipate the effects of these changes. However, the complexity of biological systems represents a severe challenge since models are simplified representations of reality, which depend on our comprehension of natural processes and on the quality of data used to build them. In this context, unifying theories, providing a general framework for describing and explaining biological mechanisms, appear necessary to predict the effects of the changes to come.
