Abstract

This study investigates the vertical distribution of metal(loid)s (K, Fe, Ti, Mn, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Pb, and As) and organic matter in sediments of Kaštela Bay, a semi-enclosed karstic coastal system influenced by both natural processes and long-term anthropogenic activities. Sediment samples collected from eight depth intervals up to 50 cm depth were analysed to identify accumulation patterns and factors controlling dispersion. Four areas with elevated metal(loid)s and organic matter contents were identified across the Bay. Distinct distribution patterns indicate the combined influence of geological background, weathering, depositional conditions, hydrodynamics, fluvial input, seasonal changes, and local anthropogenic sources. Multivariate analyses distinguished predominantly geogenic from predominantly anthropogenic element associations. The results suggest that seabed bathymetry and organic matter influence dispersion differently among element groups and may provide useful indicators for interpreting dominant controls on element/contaminant accumulation.
