Abstract
When released into the environment, pharmaceuticals (PhACs), a broad and varied class of physiologically active compounds, can become a serious environmental hazard. The ability of PhACs to accumulate in aquatic species is the main predictor of the severity of their adverse impacts. One of the key prerequisites for a reliable ecotoxicological risk assessment of environmental contamination with PhACs is the development of analytical methods for the simultaneous determination of PhAC mixtures in biota. In this thesis, novel multiresidue analytical methods for the trace determination of 44 selected PhACs and their metabolites in river water and fish tissue were developed. The kinetics of accumulation and elimination, metabolic transformations, and bioaccumulation potential of 20 selected PhACs were investigated by applying these methods in model experiments with the cyprinid organism Danio rerio. The final stage of this research was a field study, which aimed to quantify the impact of pharmaceuticals on the Sava River's wild fish population in the wider area of the city of Zagreb.
