Abstract

Sea surface temperature (SST) is important parameter in oceanography, meteorology and climatology. Comparisons of satellite and in situ measurements for different areas and periods, as well as of different sensors, still exhibit considerable mutual differences. Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) onboard the European Space Agency (ESA) ENVISAT platform is currently the most accurate and precise sensor for deriving satellite SST data, and therefore it was used as a reference sensor for improvement of SST data from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) aboard NOAA 17 platform obtained from our local High Resolution Picture Transmition (HRPT) ground station. AATSR and AVHRR SST L2 data were analyzed together with SST, aerosol and water vapor data from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Terra platform, and wind data from the SeaWinds instrument aboard QuikSCAT platform. For that purposes generic multi-source matchup database were created that allows smooth integration of new data and storing tenths millions matchup pairs. The analysis has shown that the application of global AVHRR SST algorithms to Adriatic Sea produces seasonality in the SST residuals (global AVHRR SST - AATSR SST), while using local SST AVHRR algorithm improves overall statistical parameters and eliminates seasonality. Influence of the atmospheric and diurnal warming effects has been scrutinized in explaining the observed co-variability and discrepancies.
