Abstract

Mixture material layers are used in gradient index optical systems due to their tailorable refractive index. To be able to realize the required optical performance of the system it is necessary to relate refractive index profile of the design to the volume fraction of the components of the mixture. In this study it is found that for electron beam co-deposited Nb2O5 – SiO2 mixtures the most appropriate effective medium theory that relates these properties is Lorentz-Lorenz theory. Optical properties of a mixture are related to the structure of the composite. The structural properties of the studied mixtures justify the appropriateness of application of Lorentz-Lorenz theory to this kind of effective medium.
