Abstract
Lake Rogoznica (Zmajevo oko) is a small, naturally eutrophicated marine lake. It is located on the Gradina peninsula near Rogoznica. The lake represents extreme karst with typical characteristics of meromictic and euxinic environments. The main characteristic of Lake Rogoznica is the existence of a marked seasonal stratification of water layers and the occurrence of euxinic conditions in the water gauge at the depths larger than 9 m. The mixing of water layers depends on meteorological conditions and can be gradual or sudden. At sudden mixing, the oxidation of millimolar sulfide concentration may lead to sudden oxygen consumption, sedimentation of colloidal sulphur in the surface layer and occurrence of anoxia in the whole water gauge of the lake. From 1994 to the present day, science investigations of Lake Rogoznica have been systematically carried out, showing that the lake is not only a unique anoxic environment on the Adriatic coast, but also in the entire Mediterranean. The lake is a natural bioreactor, with processes whose balance and dynamics are very sensitive to external environmental influences, including the global climate change as well.
